It depends on your country and, in a few markets, on whether the service is hairdressing or a beauty/cosmetic treatment. Most of our 39 countries tax salon services at the standard VAT/GST/sales-tax rate with no split. The Netherlands (kapper 9% vs schoonheidsspecialist 21%) and Poland (fryzjer/non-invasive kosmetyczka 8% vs other beauty services 23%) are the two clear exceptions — see the dedicated FAQ below. In the US, check your state: most exempt personal services but tax retail products.

Is there VAT or tax on tips at a salon?

Accepted Answer

No — freely given tips are outside the scope of VAT in every market we researched, including the UK (confirmed by HMRC for hairdressers specifically). Germany draws a distinction: tips are only tax-exempt when they go directly to the employee, not when the business itself levies a service charge as revenue. The default tip line on this invoice ships with the taxable flag off.

Do I need to charge tax separately on retail products I sell (shampoo, skincare) vs the service?

Yes, in the US and in the Netherlands/Poland's split-rate structures. Use the per-line taxable flag: mark the service line according to the local service-tax rule, and the retail-product line according to the local product-tax rule. They are often different.

What is the difference between a hairdresser and a beauty/cosmetic service for tax purposes?

The Netherlands and Poland both draw this exact line with different VAT rates. In the Netherlands, hairdressing (cutting, washing, blow-drying, colouring, perming, beard trimming) is 9%, while beauty-specialist treatments (facials, make-up, manicure, pedicure, sunbeds) are 21% — and a 2025 ruling confirmed "head spa" treatments do not qualify for the 9% hairdresser rate. In Poland, hairdressing and most non-invasive cosmetic services (manicure, pedicure, depilation, brow/lash styling) are 8%, but massage, tattoo, piercing, solarium and aesthetic-medicine-adjacent procedures stay at 23% even when sold from the same salon or spa menu.

My salon offers both hairdressing and beauty treatments — which rate do I use?

Our engine holds one tax rate per invoice, so it cannot apply two different non-zero rates on a single document. If a visit combines a cut (lower rate) and a facial (standard rate) in the Netherlands or Poland, either split the visit into two invoices — one per rate — or apply the higher, standard rate consistently across the whole invoice to stay on the safe side. Check the relevant tax authority guidance (Belastingdienst in the Netherlands, PKWiU codes in Poland) if you're unsure which category a specific treatment falls into.

What is a booth rental or chair rental invoice, and how is it different from a client invoice?

Accepted Answer

A booth/chair rental invoice is billed by the salon to an independent stylist for the use of a chair or workspace — it's a business-to-contractor relationship, not a business-to-customer one. The client-facing service invoice is a separate document billed by the stylist (or salon) to the end customer. In the US, salons paying a stylist $2,000 or more per year in booth rent must issue Form 1099-NEC, and the stylist reports the income (and deducts the rent) on Schedule C.

How do I invoice as a self-employed or booth-renting stylist?

Accepted Answer

Use the stylist field to identify yourself rather than the salon, and check your local small-business exemption threshold. In France, micro-entrepreneurs below the franchise en base threshold (€37,500 for services in 2026) must add "TVA non applicable" wording on every invoice. In Germany, Kleinunternehmer under §19 UStG charge no VAT. In the UK and Australia, sole traders below the VAT/GST registration threshold (£90,000 / $75,000) issue a plain invoice with no tax line.

Is Japan's qualified invoice system (インボイス制度) different for salons?

Yes — salons are named alongside restaurants, taxis and retail as an "unspecified numerous customers" trade, meaning they can issue a simplified invoice (簡易インボイス) that omits the customer's name, provided the registration number and tax-rate breakdown are shown. This applies to routine walk-in salon transactions, not just formal B2B invoices.

Can I get a tax deduction or credit for salon services, like some countries offer for home cleaning?

Accepted Answer

No — household-service tax deduction schemes such as Sweden's RUT-avdrag and Finland's kotitalousvähennys are designed for domestic/household services and do not extend to personal grooming or beauty services. Don't rely on these schemes when pricing or advising clients on salon invoices in Sweden or Finland.

How do I invoice for a deposit or cancellation fee?

Accepted Answer

Add it as its own line item and use the invoice's existing amount-paid/balance-due fields to track a deposit against the final bill. A cancellation or no-show fee is simply a separate line item — it doesn't need a structural change to the invoice.
