How to Calculate Wall Volume and Material Cost

Whether you're pricing a poured-concrete boundary wall, a retaining wall, or a block/brick masonry wall, the first number you need is the volume (or unit count) of material it will take to build it. This calculator works both ways: for a solid poured wall, it multiplies length x height x thickness to get a volume in cubic metres; for a masonry-unit wall, it works out how many blocks or bricks you need from your wall size and unit dimensions. Either way, add a waste allowance and a material unit price, and you get a total estimated material cost for the wall.

The Wall Volume Formula

For a poured/solid wall, volume = length x height x thickness — a straightforward rectangular-prism calculation. That raw volume is then inflated by your waste percentage before being priced, since a small allowance for spillage and offcuts is standard practice.

Worked example: a wall 10m long, 2m high, and 0.2m thick has a raw volume of 10 x 2 x 0.2 = 4 m³. Add a 7.5% waste allowance: 4 x 1.075 = 4.3 m³ of material to order. Multiply that by your local material price per cubic metre to get a total estimated cost — see the worked cost example for your country below.

Pro Tips

Thickness has an outsized effect on cost, since it's a straight multiplier on volume — doubling wall thickness roughly doubles the material bill for the same length and height. Get a firm thickness recommendation for your soil, wall height, and local building rules before ordering, rather than guessing.

A material unit price only covers the raw material — batching, pumping, formwork (for a poured wall) or mortar and labour (for a masonry wall) are usually priced separately and can equal or exceed the material cost itself.

Using the worked example above — a 10m long, 2m high, 0.2m thick wall (roughly 33ft x 6.5ft x 0.66ft) needing 4.3 m³ (about 5.6 yd³) of material after 7.5% waste — at a typical US price of around $170 per m³ (~$130/yd³) of poured wall material, that comes to roughly $731.00 in material cost alone, before formwork, delivery, and labor.
