A spiral staircase's treads are wedges, not rectangles, so the numbers that matter differ from a straight flight. This calculator takes your central pole diameter, overall staircase diameter, total rotation (usually 360°), and floor-to-floor rise, then works out how many steps you need, the actual riser height, the angle each tread sweeps, and the tread's arc width at the inner and outer edges — plus a helical handrail length and the minimum headroom you need above each tread.
How to use the spiral staircase calculator
- Enter the inside diameter (central pole or void) and outside diameter (full staircase width), plus the total rotation in degrees the stair turns floor-to-floor (360° for one full turn).
- Enter your total rise and your maximum riser rise — many codes cap this around 9.5in (241mm) unless your local standard sets a different limit.
- Read off the step count, actual riser height, tread angle, and handrail length, then add a waste percentage and price per tread and per metre of handrail for a materials estimate.
The spiral staircase formula, explained
Step count = ceil(total rise / maximum riser rise), rounded up since no single step can exceed the maximum riser height. Actual riser height = total rise / step count, spreading the rounding difference evenly across every step. Tread angle = total rotation / step count, and inner/outer arc = tread angle (in radians) x the inner or outer radius (arc length = radius x angle). Handrail length ≈ √(outer arc² + actual riser height²) x step count, approximating the helical run.
Worked example: 0.1m inside diameter, 1.6m outside diameter, 360° rotation, 2.8m total rise, 241mm (9.5in) maximum riser. Step count = ceil(2800/241) = 12. Actual riser height = 2800/12 ≈ 233mm. Tread angle = 360/12 = 30°. Outer arc (0.8m radius) ≈ 419mm — the usable tread width at the outer wall. Handrail length ≈ √(0.419² + 0.233²) x 12 ≈ 5.75m.
US code minimums for spiral stairways (IRC R311.7.10.1)
The IRC sets minimums for spiral stairways separate from straight-run stairs — this calculator's riser and headroom defaults already reflect them: max riser 9.5in (241mm), min tread depth 7.5in (191mm) at 12in from the narrow edge, min clear width 26in, min headroom 6ft 6in. - Headroom is the check people skip — measure clear height from each tread's leading edge (nosing) up to the underside of whatever is above it; a spiral run under a low opening can fail even when every riser and tread number checks out.
- Codes generally check tread width at a walk line partway in from the outer edge, not the full outer arc — confirm your local minimum before finalising a fabrication order.
