How many pavers do I need for a patio or driveway?
The number of pavers you need comes down to two numbers: the area you are covering, and the footprint of a single paver. Divide one by the other, round up to a whole paver, and add a waste allowance for cuts, breakages, and pattern offcuts — that is the whole calculation. This tool does that arithmetic for you: enter your patio or driveway dimensions (including multiple identical sections if your layout is not a single rectangle), pick or type your paver size, set a waste percentage, and it returns the exact number of pavers to order, plus an estimated material and installation cost.
Paver sizes are not standardised worldwide, so this calculator ships with common presets from both metric and imperial markets — a 200 x 100mm EU-standard concrete block, 300mm and 400mm square slabs, and US 4 x 8in and 12 x 12in formats — alongside the option to enter any custom size. Whether you are laying a small garden patio, a full driveway, or a path, the same method applies: work out the area, work out what one paver actually covers, divide, and buy enough extra to cover the inevitable cuts along edges and around obstacles.
How to use the paver calculator
- Enter the length and width of the patio or driveway you are paving. If your layout is made up of more than one identical rectangular section (for example, two matching parking bays), set the number of sections instead of adding the area up by hand.
- Enter your paver's length and width, or select one of the preset sizes (200 x 100mm standard block, 300 x 300mm, 400 x 400mm, 4 x 8in, or 12 x 12in) — picking a preset fills in the exact dimensions for you.
- Set a waste allowance. 5-10% covers a simple stretcher/running-bond layout; go higher, up to 20%, for a 45-degree herringbone or basketweave pattern, which needs far more cutting at the edges.

The paver calculation formula
The core formula is: total pavers = (patio area × number of sections ÷ area of one paver) × (1 + waste %), rounded up to the next whole paver, since merchants sell pavers by the unit.
Unlike bricklaying, this calculation does not add a mortar-joint gap to the paver footprint. Pavers are laid butt-to-butt (or with only a very small spacer gap of a few millimetres) directly onto a compacted base and bedding-sand layer, and the joints between them are filled afterwards with jointing sand rather than a structural mortar bed — so the paver count is simply the patio area divided by the paver's own length × width, not by a larger "paver plus joint" footprint.
Worked example: a 4m x 3m patio (one section), paved with a 200 x 100mm standard block and a 10% waste allowance. Patio area = 4 x 3 = 12 m². One paver's area = 0.2 x 0.1 = 0.02 m². Raw paver count = 12 ÷ 0.02 = 600 pavers. Add 10% waste: 600 x 1.1 = 660 pavers.
That works out to 50 pavers per square metre before waste (1 ÷ 0.02), or 55 per square metre once the 10% allowance is included — a useful rule of thumb for quickly sanity-checking a quote or a merchant's delivery note against this size of block.
Pro tips and common mistakes
Your paving pattern changes how much waste you actually need, even though it does not change the raw area-divided-by-paver-footprint arithmetic. A simple stretcher/running bond (every paver laid the same way, joints offset from row to row) wastes very little — 5-10% comfortably covers edge cuts. A 45-degree herringbone or basketweave pattern looks sharper but creates many more small triangular offcuts along every straight edge of the patio, so budget 15-20% waste for those layouts rather than reusing a running-bond allowance.
This calculator counts pavers, not the base underneath them. A patio that looks fine for a season and then sinks, rocks, or grows weeds through the joints almost always failed at the base, not at the paver count: a compacted crushed-stone sub-base plus a level bedding-sand layer is what actually carries the load and keeps the surface flat for years. Do not skip edge restraint. Pavers are held in place laterally by whatever runs along the perimeter — a concrete haunching, or plastic or metal edge restraints spiked into the base — not by the pavers themselves. Without a restraint on every open edge, the outer rows creep outward over time, joints open up, and the whole pattern can loosen within a year or two, however well the paver count was calculated.
Order all your pavers from a single batch or production run where possible. Concrete and clay pavers can vary slightly in shade between production runs, and a top-up order placed months later to cover a shortfall is the most common cause of a visibly patchy-coloured patio — a small buffer ordered up front from the same batch avoids that entirely.
At a typical US price of around $2.50 per paver, the worked example on this page — a 4m x 3m patio needing 660 pavers including 10% waste — comes out at roughly $1,650 in paver cost alone, before base material, jointing sand, and installation labor.
