How to generate a UPC or barcode

GS1 US, UPC and marketplace requirements

GS1 US is the primary source for many US UPC and GTIN assignments. Retailers and marketplaces can check whether a GTIN belongs to the brand or supplier, so random UPC numbers are risky even when the barcode image scans locally.

UPC-A is the familiar US retail barcode. EAN-13 is common internationally. ITF-14 identifies cases and grouped trade items. GS1-128 carries logistics data such as SSCC, batch, expiry, weight and serial number. QR Code, DataMatrix and GS1 Digital Link are useful for richer product data and future 2D retail use.

Print and scanner reliability

Leave quiet zones around linear barcodes and avoid stretching exported images unevenly. A symbol that looks fine on screen can fail if printed too small, too light or too close to other artwork.

Use dark bars on a light background and test on the final label material. Thermal labels, glossy packaging and low-resolution exports are common sources of scan problems.
