Aluminium Weight Calculator: How Much Does Aluminium Sheet, Bar or Tube Weigh?

Aluminium is priced and shipped by weight, but sheet, bar and tube stock is sold by size, so before you can get a supplier quote or check what a rack, pallet or vehicle can carry, you need to convert dimensions into a mass. This calculator does that conversion for rectangular sheet/plate, round bar/rod and round tube: enter the shape's dimensions, length and quantity, pick an alloy (or a custom density), and it returns the weight per piece, the total weight, and a material cost estimate.

How to Use the Aluminium Weight Calculator

  1. Choose the stock shape: rectangular sheet/plate, round bar/rod, or round tube.
  2. Enter the width and thickness (sheet/plate), the diameter (bar), or both the outer and inner diameter (tube).
  3. Enter the length of one piece and the quantity of identical pieces.
  4. Pick an alloy preset (6061, 5083, 7075 and more) to set the density, or enter a custom value.
  5. Read off the weight per piece, the total weight, and the estimated material cost.

The Math Behind the Calculation

Weight = volume x density x quantity. A rectangular sheet or plate's volume is length x width x thickness; a round bar's is pi x radius² x length; a round tube's is the outer cylinder's volume minus the inner (bore) cylinder's volume.

Worked example: a 6061 aluminium plate 1.2192 m wide, 2.4384 m long, 6.35 mm (0.00635 m) thick -- a standard 4 x 8 ft sheet at 1/4 in. Volume = 1.2192 x 2.4384 x 0.00635 ≈ 0.01888 m³. At 6061's standard reference density of 2,700 kg/m³, weight = 0.01888 x 2,700 ≈ 50.97 kg per sheet.

Pro Tips

At a typical US price of around $2.50 per kg for aluminum stock, the 4 x 8 ft, 1/4 in 6061 sheet from the worked example above (about 50.97 kg, or 112 lb) would cost roughly $127 in material, before cutting or delivery.

  • Alloy matters more for aluminium than for steel: common alloys only span about 2,600-2,800 kg/m³ in density, but strength and price vary far more, so match the preset to the alloy you are actually buying rather than assuming one generic figure.
  • On a round tube, leaving the inner diameter at zero calculates it as a solid bar and overstates the real weight by a wide margin -- always enter the bore.
