Camp Counselor Cover Letter Template (US)
Updated on August 4, 2026
A camp counselor cover letter needs to do something a generic cover letter doesn't: show a camp director you understand what the job actually involves — full-summer availability, comfort living on-site with kids, and (often) a specific certification. Camp hiring runs on its own calendar too, with most seasonal counselor positions filled between January and April for the following summer.

What ACA-accredited camps actually screen for
Camps accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) run an annual criminal background check on every seasonal staff member — mentioning you're ready to complete one shows you already understand how camp hiring works. ACA standards also require that CPR, first aid, and aquatic certifications include at least 50% in-person, hands-on instruction under a certified instructor — an online-only certificate doesn't meet the bar. If you hold a certification like this, say so explicitly and note it was earned in person.
Say you can commit to the whole season
Camps hire for a defined season, not an open-ended role, and a counselor leaving partway through summer creates a real staffing problem. State your exact availability dates clearly, and if you're able to live on-site for the season, say so — many residential camps treat this as a baseline requirement, not a bonus.

Frequently asked questions
When do camps actually hire counselors?
Most seasonal counselor hiring for the summer happens between January and April, so apply early rather than waiting for late spring.
Should I mention a background check in my cover letter?
It's a good idea — ACA-accredited camps run an annual criminal background check on all seasonal staff, so stating you're ready to complete one shows you understand the process.
Does an online-only CPR certification count?
Not for ACA-accredited camps — their standards require at least 50% in-person, hands-on instruction for CPR, first aid, and aquatic certifications. If yours was earned this way, say so explicitly.
Do I need to sign this like a contract?
No — this is a cover letter, not a legal document. A simple, genuine closing ("Sincerely, [Your name]") is appropriate; there's no need for a formal signature block or e-signature.
Should I mention if I can live on-site for the summer?
Yes, if it's true — many residential camps treat on-site availability for the full season as a baseline requirement, and stating it upfront strengthens your application.
