How to use a Malta dental invoice template

A dental invoice template should record the patient, tooth number and treatment, plus your Medical Council of Malta registration. Genuine dental care is VAT-exempt; purely cosmetic treatment such as teeth whitening may not be.

Fields to keep in the template

  • Practice/clinician name, address and Medical Council registration (Dental Surgeon).
  • Patient name, treatment date and tooth number(s).
  • Treatment/procedure description.
  • VAT-exempt note for genuine care, or 18% VAT line for cosmetic treatment.

VAT exemption and the cosmetic carve-out

Medical care regulated under the Health Care Professions Act (Cap. 464) is VAT-exempt under the Fifth Schedule to the VAT Act, including dental prostheses since Legal Notice 228 of 2024. Purely cosmetic treatments — teeth whitening being the clearest example — may fall outside the exemption and attract the standard 18% VAT.
