Malta uses "advocate" (avukat), not "lawyer" or "solicitor" — this is the legally defined term, though "lawyer" still appears in some generic searches.
What a Malta advocate's fees receipt should include
- Advocate/firm name, address, warrant number and payment details.

- Fee basis: hourly rate, fixed fee or per Tariff E of the COCP.

The advocate's warrant — a precise, multi-step process
To practise, an individual must hold a warrant issued after: (a) a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) from the University of Malta or an EU-recognised equivalent; (b) at least one year of pupillage, attending the office of a practising advocate and sittings of the Superior Courts; (c) full command of Maltese, the language of the courts; and (d) passing the warrant examination — held in Maltese, in written and oral parts, offered twice yearly (typically January and July). The Chamber of Advocates is the self-regulatory body representing all warranted advocates.
VAT, fee tariffs and the "fees receipt"
Advocates' and legal professionals' fees are standard-rated at 18% VAT, with no special exemption. Contested-fee calculations are done per Tariff E of the Code of Organisation and Civil Procedure (COCP, Chapter 12), alongside the Chamber's own Code of Ethics fee-reasonableness factors.
A "fees receipt" is the specific Maltese term for an advocate's receipt after payment, distinct from a generic invoice. Court Registry fees, levied separately under COCP statutory tariffs, and Legal Aid Malta cases (fully cost-exempt for eligible applicants) are distinct categories, not to be conflated with standard VAT-liable private billing.
