How to use a Malta freelance invoice template

Malta freelancers register as self-employed with Jobsplus and get a tax number from the MTCA. Whether VAT applies depends on turnover: below the Article 11 small-undertaking threshold (€30,000/year entry for services), many freelancers invoice without VAT; above it, the standard 18% VAT applies.

Fields to keep in the template

  • Freelancer name, address, Jobsplus/tax number and VAT number if registered.
  • Client name and address (and VAT number if B2B).
  • Service description, invoice date and due date.
  • VAT rate/amount if registered — or a "VAT-exempt small undertaking" note if not.

Provisional tax and Class 2 social security

Self-employed freelancers pay provisional income tax and Class 2 National Insurance (15% of the prior year's net income, for those earning over €910/year) in three instalments through the year rather than a single year-end payment — worth factoring into pricing.

FAQs about the Malta freelance invoice template

Do I have to charge VAT as a freelancer in Malta?

Only if you are VAT-registered. Below the Article 11 small-undertaking threshold (€30,000/year for services), you can invoice without VAT; above it, the standard 18% applies.

Does a client withhold tax from my freelance invoice?

No general withholding mechanism was found for standard Malta freelance/professional invoicing — you pay tax and Class 2 social security directly via provisional payments.
