How to create a barcode

Choose the barcode type, enter the data, and review the live preview. EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14 are numeric formats with length and check-digit rules. Code 128 is flexible for internal SKUs, order numbers, warehouse locations and asset labels.

Use SVG when the barcode will be placed into packaging artwork or a professional label design. Use high-DPI PNG for quick labels, forms, spreadsheets and systems that need an image. Quiet zone, height, bar width, colour and contrast are all part of scan reliability.

GS1 and Malta retail context

Malta businesses often sell into EU and UK-facing retail channels, so the practical requirement is usually authentic GS1 identification rather than a locally invented barcode rule. A free generator can draw the symbol, but it cannot make a random GTIN valid for a retailer or marketplace.

EAN-13 is the usual retail symbol for consumer products. ITF-14 identifies grouped trade items and cartons. GS1-128 is used when a logistics label needs structured information such as SSCC, batch, expiry date, serial number or weight. QR Code and DataMatrix can carry links or denser 2D data.

Print and scanner tips

Leave clear quiet zones around linear barcodes. Avoid placing borders, text or artwork too close to the bars, and do not stretch the barcode unevenly after export. Regenerate it at the required size instead.

Dark bars on a light background are the safest choice. Very small labels, glossy packaging, low contrast or poor thermal printing can make otherwise valid barcodes fail in practice.
