Bank Statement / Statement of Account Template (Malta)
Updated on 13 August 2026
This template covers two legitimate documents that get searched for under the same phrase: a statement a bank or other financial institution issues to its own customer, and a statement of account a business issues to a customer to show a running balance of invoices and payments. It is deliberately not built to imitate a specific third party's bank statement.
A fabricated bank statement is a fraud instrument — it's used to obtain credit, tenancies and benefits under false pretences. This template will not let you brand a document as coming from a bank you don't operate, and it opens with the same fraud warning every time: obtaining money or property by false pretences is an offence under article 308 of the Criminal Code (Cap. 9). Use this only for your own institution's or business's real statement of account.

Why the free version of this document doesn't work as a statement
The widely circulated free template has a single "Available Balance" column with no separate debit and credit entries, no opening balance, and a field labelled "Total Outstanding Balance ($)" — a lending term, not what a current-account statement shows. Without an opening balance and separate money-in and money-out columns, there is no way to check that the arithmetic of the statement is even correct.
This template fixes that by carrying an opening balance into a running ledger of debits and credits down to a closing balance, so anyone reading it — including you, before you send it — can add up the transactions and confirm the closing figure is right.
Decide up front which document you're actually making
Pick whether this is issued directly by a bank or financial institution, or is a business's own statement of account for a customer. A business statement of account is simply a ledger of what a customer has been billed and has paid — it should never claim to be issued by a bank it isn't.
What this template will not do
It will not help you reproduce a specific real bank's logo, formatting or letterhead, and it should never be presented as "proof of funds" or used to support a loan, tenancy or benefits application unless every figure on it is true and the document accurately identifies who prepared it. If you need to prove your own funds or income, the honest route is a real statement or transaction history from your own bank or payroll provider.
The sections, explained
- Issuer and account holder
- Identifies who is issuing the statement (a bank, or a business) and whose account or balance it covers.
- Statement period and currency
- The date range the statement covers and the currency the figures are stated in.
- Opening balance
- The balance carried forward from before the statement period — the starting point the transactions below build on.
- Transactions
- Each entry records a date, description, and either a debit (money out) or a credit (money in), with a running balance.
- Closing balance
- The balance at the end of the period. It should equal the opening balance plus credits minus debits — check the arithmetic before sending.
- Authenticity notice
- States plainly how a recipient can verify the statement directly with the issuer, and warns against relying on the document alone.
- Certification
- Names and signs the person who prepared the statement, so it isn't anonymous.
Maltese legal notice
This is a warning, not a compliance feature: no template can make a false statement true, and using one to support a false statement is a crime regardless of how the document looks.
Obtaining money or property by false pretences is a criminal offence
Article 308 of the Criminal Code (Cap. 9) makes it an offence to obtain money or property by false pretences; presenting a fabricated financial statement to a lender, landlord or agency falls within this offence.
WIPO Lex — Criminal Code (Chapter 9), MaltaThis is not a substitute for a real bank statement
If a landlord, lender or agency asks for proof of funds or income, they generally expect a statement issued by your actual bank or an official transaction history, not a generic filled-in template.
Minimize the account number shown
Show only the last four digits of a real account number wherever this document is shared outside the two parties who need the full IBAN or account number, to reduce exposure if the document is lost or intercepted.
How to use this template
- Choose the issuer type. Select whether this statement is issued by a bank or financial institution, or is a business's statement of account — the wording changes to match.
- Fill in the parties and period. Enter the issuer's name and address, the account holder's name, and the statement period and currency.
- Enter the opening balance and transactions. Add the opening balance, then each transaction's date, description, debit or credit amount, and running balance.
- Check the closing balance adds up. Confirm the closing balance equals the opening balance plus all credits minus all debits before you send the statement.
- Certify, sign and download. Name and sign the person who prepared the statement, then download a clean Word or PDF file — no sign-up, no watermark.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this to create a statement that looks like it's from my bank?
No. This template is for a bank issuing its own genuine statement, or a business issuing its own statement of account. Using it to imitate a bank you don't operate, or to misstate your own balances, can be an offence under article 308 of the Criminal Code.
Can I use this as proof of funds for a mortgage or tenancy application?
Only if every figure on it is true and it's issued by the actual account holder's real institution or the actual business. Most recipients asking for proof of funds expect a statement or transaction history from your real bank, not a filled-in template.
What's the difference between a bank statement and a statement of account?
A bank statement is issued by a financial institution about an account it holds. A statement of account is issued by any business to a customer, showing a running balance of what's been invoiced and paid.
Why does the template ask for an opening balance and a running balance, not just a total?
So the arithmetic can be checked. A single balance figure with no opening balance and no per-transaction detail — the shape of the widely circulated free version of this document — can't be verified by the person reading it.
Should I include my full account number?
Generally no. Showing only the last four digits reduces the damage if the document is lost, emailed to the wrong person, or intercepted, while still letting the account be identified by the people who need to identify it.
How does a recipient verify this statement is genuine?
The document includes a line telling the recipient to contact the issuer directly — by a phone number or address the recipient already has, not one printed only on the document itself.
Can I add more than three transactions?
Yes — the template includes three transaction rows to show the correct opening-to-closing arithmetic; download the document and copy the transaction block as many times as you need for a longer statement period.
