What is a Percentage Calculator?
A percentage calculator solves the most common everyday percentage problems — calculating a discount in a sale, adding VAT to an invoice, working out a pay rise, or tracking how prices have changed over time. This tool offers eight calculation modes so you can always get the right answer without remembering formulas.
VAT in Malta — 18%
Malta's standard VAT rate is 18% — the third lowest in the EU after Luxembourg (17%) and Switzerland (non-EU at 8.1%). This competitive rate has contributed to Malta's attractiveness as a financial services and iGaming hub. Reduced rates: 7% for accommodation services and private clinics; 5% for electricity, certain medicines, and confectionery; 0% for food, water, and pharmaceutical products.
Adding VAT 18% (excl. → incl.): Invoice of €1,000 excluding VAT. With 18% VAT: €1,000 × 1.18 = €1,180.
Removing VAT 18% (incl. → excl.): Receipt of €1,180 including VAT. Excluding VAT = €1,180 ÷ 1.18 = €1,000; VAT = €180. Note: subtracting 18% directly from €1,180 gives €967.60 — incorrect. Always divide by 1.18.
Calculating a Percentage of a Number
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. Example: 18% of €500 = (18 ÷ 100) × 500 = €90.
- Discount of 30% on an item costing €120: 30% × €120 = €36 saving → final price €84.
- Social security contribution (employee 10%) on gross salary of €1,800: 10% × €1,800 = €180/month.
- Income tax (25% bracket) on €20,000 of taxable income: 25% × €20,000 = €5,000.
Percentage Increase and Decrease
Formula: ((New − Old) ÷ |Old|) × 100.
Pay rise: Salary goes from €1,500 to €1,650: ((1,650 − 1,500) ÷ 1,500) × 100 = 10%.
Property: Malta's property prices have risen significantly due to foreign investment. Apartment bought for €220,000 in 2018, now worth €295,000: ((295,000 − 220,000) ÷ 220,000) × 100 = 34.1% appreciation.
