A roofing calculator turns two simple measurements — your building’s footprint and its roof pitch — into the number that actually matters for ordering material: the sloped surface area of the roof. Most people start by measuring the length and width of the house, but a roof is never as small as the ground it covers. Because a pitched roof is tilted, its real surface area is always larger than the flat footprint underneath it, and the steeper the pitch, the bigger that gap gets.

This calculator handles that step automatically. Enter your building’s length and width, pick the roof pitch (expressed the way roofers actually talk about it, as a rise per 12 units of run), choose a roofing material, and set a waste allowance for cuts and overlaps. The result is the sloped roof area, the total area including waste, and an estimated material cost — everything you need before calling a supplier or a contractor for a quote.

Unlike a bare geometry calculator, this tool also lets you swap between asphalt shingle, metal, clay/concrete tile and membrane roofing, each with its own realistic per-area cost, so the estimate reflects the material you’re actually planning to use rather than one generic blended figure.

How to use the roofing calculator

  1. Enter your building’s length and width (its footprint dimensions), and choose your preferred length unit.
  2. Enter the roof pitch as a rise per 12 units of run — for example, a "6-in-12" roof rises 6 units for every 12 units it runs horizontally. This is the standard way pitch is specified on plans and by roofing suppliers.
  3. Choose your roofing material — asphalt shingle, metal, clay/concrete tile, or membrane — each carries a different realistic cost per square meter of finished roof.
  4. Set a waste allowance (5–20%, defaulting to 10%) to cover cuts, offcuts, and the extra material that hips, valleys and ridge details always eat up.
  5. Read off the footprint area, the sloped roof area, the total area including waste, and the estimated material cost.

The math: turning a footprint into a roof area

A roof pitched at any angle covers more surface area than the flat footprint below it — tilting a plane always stretches its area relative to its "shadow" on the ground. The relationship is a straightforward trigonometric one: roof area = footprint area ÷ cos(pitch angle). Because cos(angle) gets smaller as the pitch gets steeper, dividing by it always makes the roof area bigger than the footprint — never smaller.

The calculator first converts your rise-per-12 pitch into an angle in degrees using pitch angle = arctan(rise ÷ run). It then computes the slope multiplier as 1 ÷ cos(pitch angle) — this single number tells you exactly how much bigger the real roof surface is than the footprint. A 6-in-12 pitch (about 26.6°) gives a slope multiplier of roughly 1.118, meaning the roof surface is about 11.8% larger than the footprint. A steeper 12-in-12 pitch (45°) gives a multiplier of about 1.414 — the roof is over 41% larger than the footprint.

Worked example: a rectangular house measuring 10 m by 8 m has a footprint area of 80 m². With a 6-in-12 roof pitch (26.57°, slope multiplier 1.118), the sloped roof area is 80 × 1.118 ≈ 89.4 m². Adding a 10% waste allowance for cuts and overlaps brings the total material area to about 98.4 m². At an asphalt-shingle rate of roughly $35 per m² (materials and labor combined), that’s an estimated cost of about $3,440.

This formula assumes a simple gable or shed roof shape. Real roofs with hips, valleys, dormers, or multiple roof planes will need more surface area than this basic footprint-and-pitch calculation returns — see the tips section below for how to adjust for that.

Typical roofing material coverage and cost factors

  • Asphalt shingle: the most common residential roofing material in North America; sold in "squares" (100 ft² / ≈29.7 wide m² bundles) or by the m²; mid-range material + labor cost, moderate lifespan of roughly 20–30 years.
  • Metal roofing (standing seam or metal tile/shingle panels): higher upfront material cost than asphalt but a much longer service life (40– years is normal for standing seam), and lighter weight per m² than most tile products.
  • Clay or concrete tile: the dominant residential roofing material across much of Southern Europe, Latin America and parts of Asia; heavier per m² (structural roof framing needs to be rated for the load) and typically the highest material cost of the four, but the longest lifespan, commonly 50+ years.
  • Membrane roofing (EPDM, TPO, modified bitumen): used almost exclusively on flat or very low-slope roofs, where shingles and tiles cannot be reliably installed; mid-range cost, sold and estimated by area rather than by piece.
  • Waste allowance: manufacturers and roofing associations (e.g. the US National Roofing Contractors Association, NRCA) commonly recommend a 10–15% waste factor on straightforward gable roofs, rising toward 15–20% on roofs with multiple hips, valleys, or dormers.

Pro tips and common mistakes

This calculator models a simple gable or shed roof. If your roof has hips, valleys, dormers, or more than two roof planes, the true surface area will be larger than the footprint-times-slope-multiplier result — increase your waste allowance toward the higher end of the range (15–20%) to compensate, or measure each roof plane separately and sum the results.

Always add roof overhang (the eaves that extend past the exterior wall line) to your footprint dimensions before calculating — a roof that only covers the exact footprint of the walls leaves no drip edge or gutter clearance. A typical residential overhang is 300–600 mm (12–24 in) per side.

Steeper roofs are not just more expensive in material — labor rates usually rise too, since work above roughly a 6-in-12 to 8-in-12 pitch requires additional fall-protection measures and slows installation, both of which push the per-m² labor cost higher than the flatter-roof rate this calculator assumes.

Common mistake: measuring only the building footprint from the exterior wall face and forgetting the roof itself is always larger than that footprint once pitch is applied — this is exactly the gap the slope multiplier in this calculator accounts for, so always double-check you’re reading the sloped roof area (not the footprint area) when ordering material.

Common mistake: using a single national average cost figure regardless of material — asphalt, metal, tile and membrane roofing carry meaningfully different material costs per m², and mixing them up can throw a budget off by 50% or more.

At a rate of around GBP 58/m² (materials and labour), the estimated cost for the worked example above (roughly 98.4 m² total area) would be about GBP 5,707.
