Contributions to an Income Tax Office-approved occupational pension scheme are deductible up to one-sixth (approx. 16.67%) of the member's total assessable income for the year — the standard route for a Gibraltar limited-company contractor's own scheme.
How much you can pay into an approved Gibraltar pension scheme, and the relief you get
Gibraltar gives tax relief on pension contributions, but the cap you're subject to depends on which scheme you use and whether you're assessed under ABS or GIBS. This calculator works out the relief available on contributions to an approved occupational scheme, a personal pension / Retirement Annuity Contract, or under the flat GIBS relief rule.
The relief caps for 2026/27
- Approved occupational pension scheme: contributions deductible up to roughly one-sixth (16.67%) of your total assessable income for the year
- Approved personal pension / Retirement Annuity Contract: deductible up to the lower of 20% of earned assessable income or £35,000 per year — the route most sole traders use
- If you're assessed under GIBS rather than ABS, you don't get the ABS-style percentage deduction — instead you can claim a flat deduction of up to £1,500 per year for approved pension contributions
- Gibraltar QROPS (such as the Calpe Retirement Benefit Scheme) are a common destination for transferred UK pensions, though since 30 October 2024 the previous EEA/Gibraltar exemption from the UK's Overseas Transfer Charge no longer applies automatically — a UK-side consideration to check separately if you're relocating with an existing UK pension
