The gross salary you actually need for a given take-home target
Working out the gross salary you'd need to hit a specific net income target — a monthly figure to cover your outgoings, or matching a previous take-home — means running the 2026/27 income tax and National Insurance calculation in reverse. Because the personal allowance and higher-rate threshold have been frozen since 2021 and, following the Autumn Budget, are set to stay frozen until 2030/31, the gross salary needed to hit the same net target tends to creep up each year even without a real pay rise.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your target net income, either monthly or annually
- Add any pension contribution percentage and student loan plan that would apply
- The calculator solves backwards through the 2026/27 income tax bands and Class 1 employee National Insurance rates to find the required gross salary
- Check the frozen-threshold note showing how much more gross income the same net target requires compared with previous tax years, if thresholds had instead risen with inflation
