How to create a barcode

Choose the barcode type, enter the data, and check the live preview. EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14 follow numeric length and check-digit rules. Code 128 is flexible for internal SKU, order, asset and warehouse labels.

Use SVG for packaging artwork and professional label design. Use high-DPI PNG for quick labels, documents and systems that need an image. Height, bar width, quiet zone, colour and contrast all affect scanner reliability.

GS1 UK, retail and marketplaces

GS1 UK is the relevant local source for many UK product identifiers. Retailers and marketplaces may verify whether a GTIN belongs to the supplier or brand, so a random number can be rejected even if the barcode image scans.

EAN-13 is common for UK retail products. UPC-A can be required for North American trade. ITF-14 identifies cartons and grouped trade items. GS1-128 carries structured data such as SSCC, batch, expiry, weight and serial number. GS1 QR and Digital Link are increasingly important for richer product information.

Print and scan quality

Keep a clear quiet zone around linear barcodes and avoid placing text or artwork too close to the bars. Regenerate at the required size rather than stretching the exported image unevenly.

Dark bars on a light background are the safest option. Glossy labels, low contrast, very small symbols and weak thermal printing can all cause scan failures.
