Commercial invoice template for Canada

A Canadian commercial invoice should describe goods for customs: seller, buyer, consignee, reason for export, HS code, origin, value, currency, packages, weight and Incoterms.

CBSA publishes the Canada Customs Invoice form, known as CI1. This template uses the same customs-first logic and should stay consistent with packing lists, carrier documents and broker instructions.

Fields to keep in the commercial invoice template

  • Exporter or seller name, address, contact details and business number where applicable.
  • Importer, buyer, consignee and ship-to party details.
  • Reason for export, Incoterms 2020 rule and named place.
  • Detailed goods description, HS code, country of origin, quantity, unit value and line value.
  • Currency, packages, gross weight, freight, insurance, other charges and declaration.

Customs document, not a normal tax invoice

A commercial invoice helps customs authorities and brokers classify goods, confirm value and assess duty or import taxes. It does not calculate destination duties or replace import entries, customs declarations or carrier requirements.

Exports can be zero-rated in many cases, but the commercial invoice should focus on accurate customs value and shipment detail.

Common commercial invoice template mistakes

  • Using vague product descriptions with no material, model or use.
  • Leaving out HS code, origin, currency, packages or weight.
  • Declaring zero value for samples or gifts with real customs value.
  • Using the commercial invoice to bill freight services instead of describing the goods.

FAQs about Canadian commercial invoice templates

Is this the same as a Canada Customs Invoice?

It is a commercial invoice template built around CI1-style fields. Your broker or carrier may still request their exact CI1 process.

Is this a GST/HST invoice?

No. It is mainly a customs and shipment valuation document. Import duties and taxes are assessed separately.

What value do I use for samples?

Use a realistic customs value and state the reason for export, even when no payment is being collected.
