Issuing clear, professional receipts is important for Canadian businesses of all sizes. Receipts confirm that payment has been made, support GST/HST record-keeping for CRA reporting, and help customers with expense reimbursements and tax deductions.

GST, HST and PST on Canadian receipts

Canada's sales tax system varies by province. Five provinces use the Harmonised Sales Tax (HST): Ontario (13%), New Brunswick (15%), Newfoundland and Labrador (15%), Nova Scotia (15%) and Prince Edward Island (15%). Other provinces apply the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) at 5% plus their own Provincial Sales Tax (PST).

Quebec applies the QST (Quebec Sales Tax) at 9.975% in addition to the 5% GST. Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut have no provincial sales tax, so only the 5% GST applies.

FAQs about Canadian receipts

Is this Canadian receipt generator free?
Yes. Completely free — no account, no subscription, unlimited PDF downloads.
Which tax rate should I apply?
It depends on your province. Ontario: 13% HST. BC: 5% GST + 7% PST. Quebec: 5% GST + 9.975% QST. Alberta: 5% GST only. Maritime provinces: 15% HST. Check the CRA website for your specific jurisdiction.
Do I need a receipt if I use invoices?
Invoices and receipts serve different purposes. An invoice requests payment; a receipt confirms it. For cash or e-transfer transactions, a receipt provides important proof that payment was received and is useful for both parties' records.
Can I add my GST/HST number to the receipt?
Yes. Add your GST/HST registration number in the Business Information or Notes field. If the receipt shows the GST/HST number and the tax amount separately, it qualifies as a tax receipt for CRA purposes.
