Commercial invoice generator for Canada customs and export paperwork
Create a Canadian commercial invoice for international shipments with exporter, importer, consignee, business number, reason for export, HS code, country of origin, Incoterms, declared value, packages, weight, freight and insurance fields.
A Canadian commercial invoice is a customs and shipment valuation document, not a normal GST/HST service invoice. It helps carriers, brokers and border agencies classify the goods, confirm value and process import or export clearance.
What a Canadian commercial invoice should include
CBSA publishes the Canada Customs Invoice form, commonly called CI1. Build the invoice around the shipment details a broker or carrier needs to clear the goods, not just the sale total.
- Exporter or seller name, address, contact details and business number where applicable.
- Importer, buyer, consignee and ship-to party details.
- Reason for export: sale, sample, gift, repair, return, replacement or intercompany transfer.
- Incoterms 2020 rule and named place, such as FCA Vancouver or DAP Chicago.
- Detailed goods description, HS code, country of origin, quantity, unit value and line value.
- Currency, total declared value, packages, gross weight, freight, insurance and other charges.
- Declaration, authorized name, position and date.
CI1 fields, HS code and origin
The Canada Customs Invoice format captures importer, vendor, consignee, country of origin, transportation, terms of sale, currency, packages, description, quantity, value, freight and other cost details. Keep those values consistent with the packing list, carrier documents and customs broker instructions.
Use precise goods descriptions and HS codes where available. Vague descriptions, missing origin, unexplained values or inconsistent weights can slow clearance.
GST/HST and customs value
Exports and many transportation services where the origin or destination is outside Canada can be zero-rated, but a commercial invoice itself is primarily a customs document. Import duties, GST/HST or destination taxes are assessed through the import process, not calculated by this PDF.
Commercial invoice vs freight invoice
Use this page when the document describes goods for customs: product, value, origin, HS code, packages and Incoterms. Use the freight invoice generator when you are billing transportation services such as linehaul, fuel surcharge, detention, storage or documentation fees.
