What Is a Percentage Calculator?
A percentage calculator handles the everyday maths Canadians encounter constantly — adding GST and HST at checkout, calculating a restaurant tip, working out the percentage a pay raise represents, or tracking how much home prices have changed in your city. This tool gives you instant answers across eight common percentage scenarios.
How to Calculate a Percentage of a Number
Divide the percentage by 100, then multiply by the number. 15% of C$280: (15 ÷ 100) × 280 = C$42.
Canadian examples:
- 5% federal GST on a C$1,200 appliance: 5% of C$1,200 = C$60.
- 13% HST (Ontario) on a C$95 item: 13% of C$95 = C$12.35 → total C$107.35.
- 15% tip on a C$78 restaurant bill: 15% of C$78 = C$11.70.
- 18% RRSP contribution room on earned income of C$92,000: 18% of C$92,000 = C$16,560 (subject to the annual dollar limit).
What Percentage Is X of Y?
Divide X by Y, multiply by 100. If you've saved C$14,500 toward a C$55,000 down payment: 14,500 ÷ 55,000 × 100 = 26.4% of the way there.
Percentage Increase and Decrease
Home price example: A Toronto condo purchased for C$580,000 in 2019 sold for C$720,000 in 2024. Increase = ((720,000 − 580,000) ÷ 580,000) × 100 = 24.1%.
Pay rise: Salary goes from C$67,000 to C$71,500. Increase = ((71,500 − 67,000) ÷ 67,000) × 100 = 6.7%.
Gasoline price drop: Gas falls from C$1.82/L to C$1.54/L. Decrease = ((1.82 − 1.54) ÷ 1.82) × 100 = 15.4% cheaper.
Canadian Sales Tax — Add and Remove
Canada has a layered tax system. The pre-filled rate of 13% reflects Ontario's HST. Adjust to your province:
| Province / Territory | Tax Type | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | HST | 13% |
| British Columbia | GST + PST | 12% |
| Alberta | GST only | 5% |
| Quebec | GST + QST | 14.975% |
| Nova Scotia | HST | 15% |
| Manitoba | GST + PST | 12% |
| Saskatchewan | GST + PST | 11% |
| New Brunswick / PEI / NL | HST | 15% |
Adding HST (Ontario, 13%): C$350 service + 13% HST = C$350 × 1.13 = C$395.50. Use "Add Tax / Tip" with 13%.
Removing HST: You have a C$395.50 receipt including HST. Pre-tax = C$395.50 ÷ 1.13 = C$350. Use "Remove Tax" — do not subtract 13% directly, that gives C$344.09, which is wrong.
Tip Calculator
Restaurant tipping norms in Canada: 15% for standard service, 18–20% for good service, 20%+ for excellent. On a C$96 bill with 18% tip: C$96 × 1.18 = C$113.28 total. Use "Add Tax / Tip" and enter 18%.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate HST on a purchase?
Multiply the pre-tax price by your province's HST rate. In Ontario at 13%: C$200 × 0.13 = C$26 HST → C$226 total. Use the "Add Tax / Tip" tab.
How do I find the pre-tax price from a receipt?
Divide the total by (1 + tax rate). C$226 ÷ 1.13 = C$200 pre-tax. Use "Remove Tax" with 13% (or your province's rate).
How is RRSP contribution room calculated?
Your RRSP limit is 18% of your prior year's earned income up to the CRA annual maximum (C$31,560 for 2024). Use "% of a Number" with 18% and your earned income to estimate.
What is the percentage change in Canadian housing prices?
Use the "% Increase" or "% Change" tab. Enter the old price in "From" and the new price in "To". The calculator handles the formula automatically.
What tip percentage is standard in Canada?
15% is considered the minimum for satisfactory service. 18–20% is common for good service. Many POS terminals now suggest 18%, 20%, and 25% as default options.
How do I calculate the percentage of my mortgage payment to income?
Use "What % is X of Y?" — enter your monthly mortgage payment as Number 1 and your gross monthly income as Number 2. Financial advisors typically recommend keeping this under 28–32%.
