Freight invoice template for Canada
A Canadian freight invoice should let the payer match the charge to shipment evidence such as a BOL, AWB, PRO, load number, container or rate confirmation.
CRA freight guidance says domestic freight is generally taxable at GST/HST rates, while international freight and qualifying interlined freight can be zero-rated.
Fields to keep in the freight template
- Carrier, forwarder, broker or logistics provider, business number and GST/HST account where applicable.
- Bill-to payer, shipper, consignee, third-party payer, PO or job reference.
- BOL, AWB, PRO, load, shipment, container, tracking or rate-confirmation reference.
- Origin, destination, pickup date, delivery date, route, mode, pieces, pallets and weight.
- Linehaul, fuel surcharge, detention, demurrage, storage, documentation, liftgate and customs charges separately.
GST/HST and zero-rated freight
Use the template tax note to distinguish domestic taxable freight from international or qualifying interlined freight. If one customer has mixed movements, split taxable and zero-rated shipments instead of using one blended line.
Incidental services such as loading or unloading can follow the freight treatment in the right circumstances, but the invoice should still identify the charge clearly.
Common freight template mistakes
- Leaving out BOL, AWB, PRO, load or shipment references.
- Combining accessorials with linehaul without explanation.
- Mixing domestic taxable freight with zero-rated international freight on one line.
- Using a freight invoice as the customs commercial invoice for goods.

Is this a commercial invoice?
No. This template bills freight services. A commercial invoice describes goods, value, origin and Incoterms for customs.
