How much does a pipe or tube weigh?
Pipe and tube are bought, shipped, and lifted by weight, not just length, so knowing how many kilograms a run of steel, stainless, copper, or PVC pipe adds up to matters for freight costs, lifting gear, and structural load checks. This calculator works out the weight of hollow pipe or tube from its outer diameter, wall thickness (or bore), length, and material, giving a per-metre weight and a total for the full run or order.
How to use the pipe weight calculator
- Enter the outer diameter, then choose whether to enter the wall thickness or the inner diameter directly — whichever figure you already have.
- Enter the length of one piece and how many pieces you need, then pick the material from the density dropdown (steel, stainless, aluminium, copper, brass, or PVC).
- Read off the weight per metre, the weight of one length, the total weight, and an estimated material cost.
The pipe weight calculation
Pipe is a hollow cylinder, so its volume is the outer circle's area minus the inner circle's area, times length: V = pi x [(Do/2)² − (Di/2)²] x L. Entering wall thickness instead of inner diameter, the calculator finds it first: Di = Do − 2 x wall thickness. Weight is then volume x density: W = V x rho.
Example: a 6 m length of DN50 (2 in) schedule-40 mild steel pipe — 60.3 mm outer diameter, 3.91 mm wall thickness, so Di = 60.3 − 2 x 3.91 = 52.48 mm — at a mild steel density of 7,880 kg/m3. Volume = pi x [(0.03015)² − (0.02624)²] x 6 = 0.00416 m3, so weight = 0.00416 x 7,880 = 32.7 kg for the length, or about 5.46 kg per metre.
Pro tips
At a typical Australian price of around A$1.70 per kg for mild-steel pipe stock, the 6 m DN50 schedule-40 pipe from the worked example above (32.7 kg) would cost roughly A$56 in material, before cutting or delivery.
- If you only know the nominal size and schedule (e.g. DN50 / Schedule 40), look up the standard wall thickness from a pipe schedule chart rather than guessing — wall thickness affects weight far more than outer diameter does.
- Ordering by the metre rather than in fixed lengths? Use the per-metre (linear density) figure directly instead of multiplying by an estimated piece count.
