Glass Weight Calculator: How Much Does a Pane of Glass Weigh?

Glass is priced, shipped and installed by weight. Before you order a pane for a window, shopfront, balustrade or table top -- or check whether hinges, suction lifters or a lifting crew can handle it -- you need to convert its size into a mass. This calculator does that: pick a shape, enter its dimensions, thickness and glass type, and it returns the weight per pane, the total weight for however many panes you need, and an estimated cost.

How to use the glass weight calculator

  1. Choose the pane shape: rectangular, circular, triangular, or round rod/edge stock.
  2. Enter length and width (or diameter for circular/round rod, or base and height for triangular), plus thickness -- mm is the usual glass unit.
  3. Set the quantity of identical panes, useful for pricing a multi-pane insulated glazing unit or a full order.
  4. Pick a glass type preset to set the density, or enter your own, then read off the weight and estimated cost.

The math behind the calculation

Weight = volume x density. Volume is area x thickness for a rectangular or circular pane (base x height / 2 x thickness for a triangle). This calculator defaults to tempered glass at 2,520 kg/m3, but the standard reference figure for ordinary annealed/float glass is a rounder 2,500 kg/m3 -- often quoted as "2.5 kg per m2 per mm of thickness."

Worked example: a 1.2 m x 0.9 m pane, 4 mm thick, at 2,500 kg/m3. Area = 1.2 x 0.9 = 1.08 m2. Volume = 1.08 x 0.004 = 0.00432 m3. Weight = 0.00432 x 2,500 = 10.8 kg. A double-glazed unit made of two such panes weighs roughly 21.6 kg in glass alone, before the spacer bar and gas fill.

Pro tips

At a typical price of around AUD 5 per kg of glass, the 1.2 m x 0.9 m pane from the worked example above (4 mm thick, roughly 10.8 kg) would cost about AUD 54 in raw glass -- cutting, edgework and glazing labour are additional.

  • Laminated and insulated (double or triple-glazed) units weigh more than a single pane of the same size -- calculate each glass layer separately and add them together rather than using one thickness figure for the whole unit.
  • Check hardware and crew limits, not just cost: hinges, sash balances, suction lifters and installers all have a rated capacity that a large, heavy pane can quietly exceed.
