Before you order a single deck board, you need two numbers: how many boards to buy and how many fasteners to fix them with. Order too few boards and you're back at the timber yard mid-build hoping the batch still matches; order too few fasteners and the job stalls on a Saturday afternoon. This calculator solves both at once — it takes your deck's length and width, divides that area by the coverage of a single board, adds a waste allowance for cuts, and works out a fastener count from your chosen fixing method, then turns the total into a material cost estimate.
The board count is the part a rough area estimate always gets wrong. A deck is built from discrete boards of a fixed width and length, and those boards almost never divide evenly into your deck's dimensions — there's always a partial board at the last row and offcuts from butt joints along the run. Every board also needs fixing down, and how many fasteners that takes depends on the method: exposed screws or nails sit at a standard rate per square metre, while hidden clip systems (which fix boards from the side, leaving no visible fastener heads) typically need only about half as many. This tool applies sensible defaults for both waste and fastener rate, lets you adjust either, and gives you a board count, fastener count, and total material cost before you set foot in the timber yard.
How to use the decking calculator
- Enter the length and width of the deck you're building, in the unit that suits you — the calculator multiplies these into a total deck area.
- Choose a board width from the preset list (common sizes from 90mm up to 150mm, or roughly 3.5-6 inches), or enter a custom width if your supplier stocks something different.
- Enter the board length you're buying — the length of a single deck board as sold, not the length of the deck itself.
- Pick your fastener type: screws, nails, or hidden clips. Hidden clips typically need only around half as many fasteners per square metre as exposed screws or nails, since one clip often secures two adjoining boards at once.
- Adjust the waste percentage if your deck has an awkward shape, lots of butt joints, or a diagonal board layout that wastes more material than a straightforward rectangular run.

The decking calculation formula, explained
The core formula has two parts. First, deck area = deck length x deck width. Second, boards needed = (deck area x (1 + waste percentage)) / single board area, where single board area is just the board's width x its length — and since boards are sold as whole units, that figure is always rounded up to the next whole board.
Fasteners are worked out separately, as a flat rate per square metre of deck area that depends on your fixing method: roughly 37-38 fasteners per square metre for exposed screws or nails, and about half that for hidden clip systems. That rate isn't tied to your specific board width, so it's a good general estimate rather than an exact count for every board profile — buying a small surplus of fasteners is standard trade practice regardless.
- Worked example: a deck measuring 4m x 3.5m = 14 m² of deck area.
- Boards: 140mm wide x 3.6m long, giving a single board area of 0.14 x 3.6 = 0.504 m², with the standard 10% waste allowance.
- Deck area with waste = 14 x 1.10 = 15.4 m².
- Boards needed = 15.4 / 0.504 = 30.6, rounded up to 31 boards.
- Fasteners (screws): 14 m² x roughly 37.7 fasteners per m² = 527.4, rounded up to 528 fasteners.
- Multiply 31 boards by your cost per board to get your total board cost, before fasteners, joists, or other substructure materials.
Pro tips and common mistakes
This calculator covers the decking boards and fasteners that sit on top of your deck frame — it doesn't size the joists, beams, or footings underneath. For the supporting structure, run your deck dimensions and joist spacing through a dedicated framing or floor joist calculator before you finalise your materials list.
Worked example at Australian prices: for a 4m x 3.5m deck (14 m²) with 140mm x 3.6m boards and the standard 10% waste allowance, you'd need roughly 31 boards. At a typical Australian price of around $17 per board, that comes to approximately $527 for boards alone, before fasteners, joists, or a tradesperson's labour — use the calculator's cost output for the full estimate in AUD.
- Leave a consistent gap between boards, typically 5-8mm for wood and often slightly less for composite — it lets water drain through instead of pooling on the surface, and gives wood boards room to expand and contract with moisture without buckling or springing fasteners.
- Composite decking (wood-plastic blend) costs more per board upfront than pressure-treated wood but needs no staining or annual maintenance and resists rot and splintering — wood decking is cheaper to buy but needs regular re-sealing and eventual board replacement as it weathers.
- Hidden fastener clip systems leave a cleaner top surface with no visible screw heads, but they only work with grooved-edge boards designed for that clip profile — check your board profile matches your chosen clip system before you order either.
- Running boards along the long axis of the deck is the standard default and usually wastes the least material, but a diagonal or picture-frame border layout needs meaningfully more waste allowance for the extra angled cuts.
- Leave a gap between the decking and the house wall, and keep the deck surface below any interior door threshold — trapping moisture against a wall is one of the most common causes of rot in a deck frame.
