Insurance broker tax invoice generator for Australia
Create an Australian insurance broker tax invoice, premium invoice or debit note with policy number, insured party, insurer, cover period, transaction type, AFSL or authorised representative detail, premium, broker fee, GST, stamp duty and return premium fields.
Australian insurance billing is not a generic retail invoice. The policyholder needs to connect the amount due to a policy, insurer, period and transaction, while the broker needs to keep premium, broker fees, emergency-services levies, GST and state stamp duty separated.
What an Australian insurance invoice should include
A useful insurance invoice makes the policy context visible. Include the insured, insurer, policy number, coverage period, transaction type and licence reference so the document can be matched to the policy schedule and insurer closing.
- Broker, agency or authorised representative name, ABN, address, contact details and payment instructions.
- AFSL number, authorised representative number or licensee details where relevant.
- Insured or policyholder name, billing address and client reference.
- Insurer, policy number, class of cover, coverage period and effective date.
- Transaction type: new business, renewal, endorsement, cancellation, instalment or return premium.
- Base premium, broker fee, policy fee, emergency-services levy, GST, stamp duty and return premium separately.
- Due date, cancellation warning, remittance details and client-money or trust-account notes where used.
GST, stamp duty and premium taxes
Australian general insurance commonly has 10% GST applied to the premium and broker fee, while state or territory stamp duty is generally calculated separately and is not itself subject to GST. This creates a tax-on-tax style calculation that a single tax-rate field cannot always model.
Enter the stamp-duty amount from the insurer or broker closing as its own non-taxable line item rather than forcing it through the GST field.
AFSL and broker disclosure
ASIC says a business providing financial services must hold an Australian financial services licence unless exempt or acting as a representative of a licensee. For broker-issued documents, show the AFSL, authorised representative or licensee reference your compliance file expects.
Keep broker fees and administration fees separate from insurer premium so the policyholder can see what is paid to the insurer and what is charged by the intermediary.
Endorsements, instalments and return premiums
For a mid-term endorsement, show the endorsement number, effective date and pro-rata additional or return premium. For a cancellation, show the return premium as a negative line or issue a credit-style document.
If the policy is paid by instalments or premium funding, keep finance charges, instalment fees and premium amounts on separate lines.
Common Australian insurance invoice mistakes
- Combining premium, GST, broker fee and stamp duty into one unexplained total.
- Applying GST to stamp duty as if it were an ordinary taxable fee.
- Omitting policy number, insurer, coverage period or transaction type.
- Leaving out AFSL or authorised representative detail expected on broker paperwork.
- Hiding broker fees inside the premium amount.
- Showing a cancellation credit without policy, endorsement or effective-date context.
